Local URCs celebrate King’s Coronation

As the nation celebrated the Coronation of King Charles III, congregations across the United Reformed Church (URC) held afternoon tea parties, coffee mornings and much more.

East Midlands Synod

Abington Avenue URC took part in The Big Help Out on 8 May, where people across the UK gathered to lend a hand in their communities.

A team at the church made, decorated and delivered coronation cupcakes and crown biscuits around the Abington community.

Another team went around picking up litter and planted seeds in the garden.

Spalding URC held a lunch comprising scones, cakes and pastries, and had a table showcasing historical royal information. The 1st Spalding Girls Brigade leaders based at Spalding URC thanked all who helped make the event a success.     

    

West Midlands Synod

A great weekend of fun was held at Holyhead Road URC. On 6 May, the church live streamed the Coronation Prom Concert from the Royal Albert Hall with fizz, cheese and biscuits and lots of singing along.

After its Sunday service, a lunch was held where members and friends of the church enjoyed meeting and testing their royal knowledge with a quiz.

Wessex Synod

A fun time was had by all at Fleet URC’s coffee morning on 3 May. To celebrate the King’s coronation, members and friends of the church wore red, white or blue, or dressed up for a palace garden party.

                   

Fun activities included a coronation quiz and lots of party food. The best-dressed prize went to Kevin Williams who wore a civil war costume.

North Western Synod

Bamford Chapel and Norden URC held a lovely afternoon tea followed by an outside service.

               

South Western Synod

Emmanuel URC’s lunch club team served a celebratory roast dinner and trifle for more than 30 people, and it’s Thursday Link enjoyed singing and sharing stories of the last Coronation or sightings of royals.

The 1st Greenmeadow Rainbows Girl Guides based at church each made some bunting to decorate their homes for the Coronation. A big thank you went out to the guides on the church’s social media channel for leaving some pieces at the end of their session so that they could be hung in the church porch as part of the Coronation decorations.

Yorkshire Synod

At Christ Church Halton’s Coronation picnic, the celebration cake was cut by the church’s eldest member, Frank Ireland, who, at 103, has been alive during the reign of 5 monarchs, and the youngest, Ella Wonnacott, aged 7, who rarely misses Messy Church or Sunday morning worship.

Wigton Moor URC held an afternoon lunch for its community afternoon to celebrating the Coronation.
   
Thames North Synod
This beautiful bunch of flowers from St John’s New Barnet in the colours of the Union Jack.
Christ Church Uxbridge held a Big Help Out volunteer day to tackle various job around the church. There were activities for all ages and abilities to join in with, from painting meeting rooms, to tackling the gardening in the courtyard, and cleaning carpets, sorting out cupboards and sitting down shredding paperwork.

   

Louise George, a member of the church said: “It was lovely to see the church community coming together to help with this. We finished the day with a shared meal of pizza followed by a delicious cake baked by one of our junior church members.”

Southern Synod

Trinity Church Willingdon held a special coronation café church on Sunday followed by a banquet as part of the Big Lunch initiative.
