An extra special present was gifted to a Bury Park URC member in form of an invitation to a Christmas reception at Downing Street.
David Jonathan, known as Johny, attended the event at Number 10, which recognised Christians from across denominations who are actively involved in voluntary service within their local communities.
The reception brought together church leaders and volunteers to celebrate the vital contribution faith communities make in promoting hope, wellbeing, and reconciliation.
Johny’s invitation reflects more than 20 years of commitment to peace, justice, reconciliation, and interfaith engagement. Since 2001, he has served as a Council for World Mission–URC Partner, working with Grassroots Luton and the Luton Council of Faiths to develop initiatives that embrace people of all ages and backgrounds. In 2022, he was awarded an MBE in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours List 2022.
Reflecting on the occasion, Johny said: “I feel humbled and grateful to have received this invitation. I remain committed to celebrating Christmas by loving God and loving our neighbours and sharing Christ’s message of peace and goodwill to all.”
At the event, guests enjoyed mulled wine, canapés, and carol singing led by a small community choir. Prayers were led by the Revd Baroness Maeve Sherlock, Minister of State for Work and Pensions in the House of Lords.
And Jasmine Mitchell, winner of the 2025 Great British Bake Off, spoke about the importance of hospitality, highlighting how sharing food can bring people together across divides. Steve Reed MP addressed guests on behalf of the Prime Minister, expressing gratitude for the work of churches and faith groups in communities across the country.
