In November, a group from North Western Synod concluded their Faith-Filled Life stream of Stepwise with a memorable away day at North Blackburn United Reformed Church.
After months of Zoom sessions exploring discipleship topics like recognising fellow Christians and hearing God’s call, Ed Lyne’s, a Northern College student who is completing a placement within North Western Synod, said it was a joy to meet in person and reflect on their shared journey.
He explained how Zoom provided a safe space for honest discussions, allowing the group to tackle challenging topics with openness—from grappling with life’s difficulties to exploring the emotional weight of comforting others. One standout activity examined whether phrases like “they’re in a better place now” are helpful or unhelpful, sparking thoughtful debates that highlighted the importance of empathy and context.
During the away day, Ed shared how the group explored the theme of “challenges”, guided by John 6:66-71, where some of Jesus’ disciples turn away. This prompted heartfelt reflection such as questioning whether the challenges that life throws may cause people to walk away from Jesus to work out their own problems?
“Sharing our struggles over months of conversation brought a depth to these discussions that was truly moving,” said Ed.
The day ended with powerful prayer projects—from a community prayer wall to a scrapbook of reflections—each showcasing the faith and creativity of the group.
“Knowing the challenges behind these creations made them all the more inspiring,” added Ed.
“For anyone considering Stepwise: take the leap! It’s a journey of trust, growth, and renewed faith that you’ll never forget.”
