Chorley URC

Chorley URC - A vacant CRCW project, accredited in October 2015.

Chorley URC is a town centre church in the hub of a large market town on the doorstep of the West Pennine Moors. Chorley URC seeks to serve both the needs of its immediate local neighbourhood and the wider community of Chorley.

Chorley URC has a long standing commitment to the community and a number of local organisations and agencies (uniformed organisations, leisure activities, community services) already use the premises. The location and car parking availability make this an attractive place for outside organisations and Chorley URC would like to develop their premises further and improve their facilities, e.g. kitchens, access issues, for the community’s benefit.

In their strategy document “Dreaming our Dreams” 2012, they set a target of “engaging with local agencies to identify gaps in the provision” in a desire to further engage with and serve the local community. To do this, their Community Engagement Project (CEP) completed at the end of 2013, was commissioned with Pulse, to research what the community’s needs are and to identify how the church could further engage with its surrounding community, to meet those needs with buildings fit for purpose, as they did not want to undertake any major building work to improve the premises until they knew what those needs were. A CRCW would assist the church community in taking those findings forward and would also have the opportunity to help shape the future development of the premises. By doing so, he/she would be helping the church community build on existing mission and service for the community and embrace the vision for the future as a neighbourhood/ community church - a church in the community, for the community.

Chorley URC hopes to facilitate the provision of community services to meet the needs in the community. A recent initiative has been the weekly Open Kitchen with Chorley Help the Homeless to provide meals for vulnerable families throughout the year and a Soup Kitchen also runs during the winter months. Pulse have enabled further discussions with other community organisations and agencies.
